Topics Course This course will focus on how material culture and socially constructed space, primarily accessed through archaeological contexts, can give us new insights into the colonial histories of Indigenous and African peoples in the Americas (North, Central, and South America, and the Caribbean). We will explore 1) the materiality of colonialism, and the quest for goods and currencies that spurred European colonial ventures throughout the world; 2) the meanings present in the adoption, rejection, or movement of European goods; and 3) the formation and material manifestations of new colonial identities.
