Topics course. A study of the individual's struggle for self-definition in society: from the superfluous man, through the underground man, to the role of women. Emphasis on the social, political, and ideological context of the works considered. Authors treated include Pushkin, Lermontov,Gogol, Goncharov, Turgenev, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov.
