English 135 - WRITING ABOUT SPORTS

Students learn to use literary techniques to write factual, engaging narratives that read like fiction. Based on research, interviews, and personal experience, creative nonfiction encompasses a wide range of genres, including memoir, travel writing, nature writing, science writing, food writing, and biography. Prerequisites: one WI course. Enrollment in each section limited to 16. Course may be repeated once on a different topic. (E) Through reading, in-and-out-of-class writing, and editing one another's work, students will learn different forms of creative non-fiction essays through a focus on the topic of sports. Among other subjects, students may explore their own sports backgrounds, the dynamics of individual sports, sports ethics, the lives and careers of sports figures, and subjects like momentum: where does it come from and where does it go? Students will be encouraged to use sports-related material in the Smith Archives and explore our sportsrich environment, including Smith athletics and local landmarks such as the Basketball Hall of Fame.
