In the United States and abroad, in the past and today, the nature and scope of women's education is deeply connected to religious, economic, and social norms and beliefs. Why and how we educate women are interdisciplinary questions that draw on issues of national identity and culture. In this course, students will explore the politics, history and sociology of this subject, beginning in the United States and ending with a global perspective. Students will consider the challenges of educating women in countries where female literacy is still deeply contested and examine the political processes likely to address this situation. Students will also have an opportunity to pursue research projects the College Archives and Sophia Smith collection. (E)
