Topics course. This course studies the discourse of sustainability ? both advocacy and criticism ? in Latin American architecture and planning theory and practice. We study both locally produced theory ? written from Latin America with a Latino/Latina public in mind, and theory produced in the North American context with an intended global audience. Topics include Marginality and Urbanization in Latin America, the Notion of Socially Sustainable Development, Sustainable Development vis-a-vis Dependency Theory, Sustainability vis-a-vis the Discourse of Modernization, and the Notion of "Green Imperialism."
