This course studies early America (1500-1820) with an explicit focus on the history of women while also considering changes in meanings and definitions of gender and sexuality over time. In addition to analyzing primary documents written by and about women, we consult the work of recent scholars in the fields of early American history, women?s history, and gender and sexuality studies to help us interpret these voices from the past. The focus on women, gender, and sex/sexuality will prompt us to rethink the major issues in early American history, such as contact, colonization, slavery and freedom. (E)
