Topics course The course will examine the interactions between different forms of African American music and literature. Music and literature will be considered in their historical and cultural contexts. Students will read works of fiction, poetry, and drama that are inspired by black music, as well as theoretical discussions of American popular music and the formation of culture. A key part of the course will be listening to and seeking to understand key examples of several genres of black music, from spirituals and work songs, to blues and jazz, to calypso and beyond. Writers may include Albert Murray, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Gayle Jones, Toni Morrison, Staceyann Chin, Jean ?Binta? Breeze,as well as critical essays that theorize race, culture, writing, and music.
