English 120 - COLQ: SHAKESPEARE AND FILM

Each colloquium is conducted by means of directed discussion, with emphasis on close reading and the writing of short analytical essays. Priority will be given to incoming students in the fall-semester sections of the colloquia. Other students should consult the course director about possible openings. Enrollment in each section limited to 20. A study of the way filmmakers edit, distort, clarify, and otherwise interpret Shakespeare's plays; the process of metamorphosing theatre into film, imagery into image. Works to be studied may include Henry V, Richard III, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice and The Tempest.
