An introduction to the theoretical and practical questions of building archives as well as a sampling of the surprising insights produced by archival research. The seven-week lecture series will broaden the definition of "what counts as an archive"-and includes online databases, oral histories, clothing collections, architectural and art historical records, and cemeteries. Professional archivists and public historians reflect on contemporary directions and challenges in their fields. Course work consists of weekly readings, two Moodle posts and a short essay based on a trip to a local archive, using a finding aid. Elected S/U only. This course serves as a gateway to the archives concentration.
