This course explores a specific idea, concept, period, person or event important in the history and/or aesthetics of dance. Topics vary depending on the instructor's research and expertise. This course is an in-depth exploration of the Cunningham dance technique (Merce Cunningham) and it's cultural context from practical and theoretical perspectives. The class is structured into four class blocks consisting of three movement technique classes followed by a lecture/discussion class. Technique classes include an introduction to principles and movements from the Cunningham technique taught at the intermediate dance level, targeting skills in rhythmic accuracy, strength and flexibility, coordination, alignment, artistry and performance. The learning of the technique is framed within an analysis of literature cutting across dance history and art history, and cultural studies. Through readings, documentaries, class discussions and research assignments we examine the cultural terrain that gave birth to post modern dance and the influences of Cunningham on current contemporary dance forms. Intermediate level dance experience required.
