Topics include disappearance of the hereditary aristocracy and rise of the scholar-official class, civil service examination system, Neo-Confucian orthodoxy, poetry and the arts, Mongol conquest, popular beliefs, women and the family, Manchus in China, domestic rebellion, and confrontation with the West.
