Topics course.
Authors vary from year to year, but they are generally chosen from a list that includes epic and lyric poets, historians, orators, comedians and novelists, depending on the interests and needs of the students. May be repeated for credit, provided the topic is not the same. Prerequisite: two courses at the 200-level or permission of the instructor. The focus is on first person narratives. How does medieval spiritual autobiography differ from autobiography as modern readers understand the genre? How can one distinguish between self-revelation and self-fashioning or autohagiography? Is a psychological interpretation of medieval texts valid, and if so, of what anachronistic assumptions should the modern reader be wary? Texts include the prison diary of early Christian martyr Perpetua; selections from Augustine's Confessions, selections from works by Elisabeth of Schonau, Hildegard of Bingen, Guibert de Nogent, Rather of Verona, Abelard, Heloise; selected testimonies from the Fournier Inquisition Register. Prerequisite: intermediate Latin or permission of the instructor.
