Topics course. An introduction to the music of Japan focusing on selected ritual, instrumental, theatrical and popular music genres. In addidtion to placing music within its socio-cultural context, the course explores how distinctly Japanese genres have developed in response to internal social changes and contact with foreign cultures. There are no prerequisites for this class.
