Selected special topics that vary from year to year; typically some subset of the following: climate physics, cosmology, general relativity, nuclear and particle physics, optics, solid state physics. Prerequisites vary with the topics of the course. An introduction to the structure and history of the universe. Topics include the big bang model, inflation and the early universe, dark matter and dark energy, accelerated expansion and the possible futures of the universe and multiverse theories. The course also introduces some of the basic conceptual ideas behind general relativity and their application to cosmology. Prerequisites: PHY 210 and PHY 215, or permission of the instructor.
