Advances in material science have lead the way to new technologies in every engineering discipline and continue to be at the forefront of developing fields. The key theme that will be highlighted in this course is that the useful properties of any material are ultimately related to its chemical and physical structure. Both chemical composition and the processing of a given material critically impact its structure. Course topics will include the primary types of materials (metals, ceramics, and polymers), composites, phase behavior, structural imperfections, mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, as well as the influence that material design and selection can have on society. Prerequisites CHM 111 and EGR 270 or permission of the instructor.
Topic: Materials Science. Not open to first-years, sophomores
Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
