Topics course. Historical debates surrounding slavery, diaspora, gender and social identity, particularly of African-descended people, throughout the Atlantic world, tracing the experiences of black people from Western Africa and the Middle Passage to the British colonies, the United States, Haiti and the British Isles. A focus on enslavement in the United States but also on forced laborers throughout the larger Atlantic World. Particular attention to the historiography of slavery, including methodology, African cultural retentions as well as questions of agency, resistance and humanity. In contrast to historical renderings of slavery, students also read descriptions from enslaved people themselves.
