Topics course. This colloquium introduces students to the history and debates over Latin American economic development from the early independence period to the present, with an emphasis on the late 19th century to the late 20th century. We trace macroeconomic change, its impact on and roots in micro histories, regional commonalities and differences, and the fierce debates that emerged in the region over Latin America's place in the world economy at key moments, especially the mid-20th century. Readings draw on a core textbook, scholarly articles, and primary sources, including texts from influential Latin American economic actors and theorists. {H}
