Each topic focuses on a particular literary epoch, movement, genre or author from German literary culture. All sections taught in German.: This course explores the intersection of language, gender, and sexuality in German-language literature and culture of the Jahrhundertwende. Readings to include theoretical texts by Nietzsche and Freud; literary texts from Schnitzler, Hofmannsthal, Th. Mann, Musil, and Kafka; forays into the visual works of Klimt, Schiele, and Kokoschka. Conducted in German.
Topic: Kultur in extremis: Literature and Culture at the Turn of the 20th Century. Permission Instructor/Chair. Not open to first-years, sophomores
