Topics course: In the new millennium, Japan faces numerous challenges in the wake of nuclear disaster, environmental decline, and economic uncertainty. This seminar will examine different responses in literature, film and popular culture to such challenges, including post-Fukushima writing, manga of the precariat, and dystopic cinema. We will consider both the limitations and new possibilities emerging from these difficult times. The seminar will culminate in individual student research projects focusing on specific texts from contemporary Japan.
