Explores how Russian writers and artists responded to the tumult and upheaval of the twentieth century, an epoch encompassing the Bolshevik Revolution, two World Wars, the ascent of Stalin, and the decline and collapse of the Soviet Union, as well as unprecedented innovation in artistic cultures. Tracing points of intersections across poetry, prose, and visual art, this survey considers key works of the Russian avant-garde, modernism, Socialist Realism, critical realism, conceptualism, and postmodernism in historical context. Conducted in English, no previous knowledge of Russian required.
