What is musical improvisation and what drives us to do it? In performance, music is malleable, Adaptable, fleeting. There exists a wide spectrum of flexibility in music, from completely improvised to carefully rule-based. This course introduces traditions of improvisation from classical cadenzas to Miles Davis to rock guitar solos. Course activities include developing listening skills, reading philosophies of improvisation, a research project, and improvising in class to fully appreciate this widespread practice. (E)
