Our course centers on mobility and fluidity, terms prominent in border and identity studies that challenge traditional ideas about self and identity.  How do these terms apply to a group of Spanish artists and intellectuals who escaped the Spanish Civil War?  Collectively, they may be viewed as a dislocated society that created a "new home" by way of new horizons,  landscapes, and rhythms reflected in their poetry, diaries and correspondence, allowing us, in turn, to reconstruct their lives from Cuba to Argentina.  Their writings about the oceans, rivers, and seas of their new surroundings express the strife of exile.  Enrollment limited to 25.
