This course aims to contextualize and connect different urban experiences across the world. The course will address the complex relationship between urbanization, globalization, and inequality with the exploration of the term ‘global city’. Throughout the course we will examine a series of case studies to provide concrete examples of how different cities such as London, NYC, Dubai, Berlin, Shanghai, and Istanbul responded to globalization. We will explore the brief historical development of each city, and the steps are taken to attain global status with paying attention to different topics such as gentrification, migration and urban movements.
