Tourism is often lauded as the key to economic development for many countries. However, scholarly work has shown that historical relationships to imperialism and colonialism impact how people and places experience tourism. This course introduces students to debates, methods and conceptual frameworks in the study of race, sex, and tourism. Through a review of scholarly texts, tourism paraphernalia, films, and travelogues we examine the social, political, and ethical considerations inherent in multiple forms of tourism including eco-tourism; wellness or health; sun-sand-sea, heritage, dark, and voluntourism in locales ranging from the Caribbean and the Americas to Africa and Europe. Enrollment limited to 12. Juniors and Seniors only. Instructor permission required.
