Education and Child Study 278 - Race and Education

This course examines the centrality of race in education mainly in the United States but also in other parts of the world. Using an interdisciplinary lens, we will explore an array of theories of race and intersectionality as they relate to education and interrogate related empirical research and personal narratives. Among the topics to be explored are the history of the concept of race; complexity of race and the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, class, nationality and identity; everyday racism and in educational contexts; racialized educational policies and practices; and strategies for working towards racial equity in educational contexts. Enrollment limited to 35.
