This seminar will explore the creation and afterlife of Frankenstein, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s extraordinary first novel (written at age 19) about monstrosity and the experience of feeling not quite human. We will read Shelley’s novel closely, consider its literary and historical influences (including writing by her parents and friends), and investigate its monstrous legacy (in film adaptations, novels, poems, comics, and popular culture). More than 200 years after it was written, this early science fiction novel continues to speak to our most urgent questions about gender, reproduction, science, technology, race, animality, disability, violence, justice, and belonging. Enrollment limited to 12. Juniors and seniors only. Instructor permission required.
