Offered as IDP 200 and ARS 200. While capitalist systems are pervasive, it is still possible to create and distribute resources on the basis of solidarity and cooperative ownership. In this studio course, we will explore how the designs of everyday items currently uphold capitalist values, and we’ll use design processes and accessible materials to explore alternatives offered by solidarity economies. Students will work on independent and group projects to create an artifact inspired by a local group working to build a future beyond capitalism– an artifact that addresses a practical problem while also expressing the group’s values. Prerequisites: 100 level studio art course, IDP 116 or equivalent. Enrollment limited to 16. (E)
