In 2011, the world watched the spectacular unfolding of the Arab Spring through media outlets that celebrated the uprisings as exceptions to the rule of modern Arab history. A protracted interrogation of this (mis)representation, this upper-level seminar traces the long history of revolutionary thought and action that precipitated these uprisings and shaped contemporary Arab politics. Engaging broader debates on revolution in world history, we consider a range of Arab experiences and discourses of revolution—from the 1908 Ottoman inqilab to the ongoing Palestinian Intifada—to recover a non Eurocentric framework from which to rethink transformative politics for our global revolutionary present Enrollment limited to 12.
