This course will cover our understanding of the impact of early life adversity on the brain and how this can lead to differences in cognitive and mental health outcomes. To do this, we will deeply examine different dimensions of early life adversity. We will focus mainly on studies in humans, but will look to the animal literature for grounding in mechanisms. We will examine current theoretical models of how adversity impacts the brain, the latest literature testing these models, how these differences in brain development may impact children in the long term, and factors that may provide resilience for those experiencing adversity. Enrollment limited to 12. Juniors and seniors only. Instructor permission required.

[CE] JR/SR only; NSC 312 Limit; Prereq: NSC 210

Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
