This survey provides students with an introduction to how madness has been understood and experienced over time and across a variety of spaces. The first portion of the course provides historical background to early descriptions of mental unrest and the range of ways in which it was depicted. The second part looks at mental institutions from across the world, highlighting how different groups believed madness was best conceptualized, contained, and cured. And the last part of the course looks at current controversies and developments in the world of mental health, including deinstitutionalization, biological treatments, and the uneven burdens of mental distress. Enrollment limited to 40. (E)
