What is Canadian literature and culture? This question is central to the course’s objectives through study of authors and orators working in a variety of forms and genres—fiction, poetry, newspapers, essays, film, and television produced in what is known as Canada. The course engages with work from a diverse range of people, Indigenous, Canadian, European, Caribbean, West Indian, South Asian, East Asian, and African backgrounds over many generations who have contributed and continue to influence the rich creativity coming from a part of the world that, often and especially in the US, is typically understudied and under-appreciated—even unknown.
