Sociology 219 - Medical Sociology and the New Public Health

What do wellness influencers have to do with health care policy? This course explores the privatization of health care in the US and how it impacts human health today. Readings cover how a privatized medical system shapes care possibilities, care access, and the definition what counts as good health. Students apply core concepts from medical sociology and the political economy of care to unpack current events around health and wellbeing. By questioning the assumption that health is a personal responsibility, the course helps students understand the intersection of health, culture, and politics. Prerequisite: SOC 101. Enrollment limited to 35.
