How have cultural crossings framed expressions of wonder, artistic innovation, and political reflection in the Caribbean? Traversing twentieth and twenty-first century visual art, music, and literature, students explore cultural depictions of amazement and the fantastic in transnational contexts, develop a critical vocabulary and intersectional perspectives, and analyze inter-American and transatlantic cultural histories regarding Surrealism, literature of the fantastic, cyberpunk, and supernatural horror, drawing from ecocriticism, critical race theory, gender studies, and postcolonial studies. The course includes authors such as Wilfredo Lam (Cuba), Nicolás Guillén (Cuba), Coco Fusco (US, Cuba), Francisco Javier Angulo Guridi (Dominican Republic), Luis Palés Matos, (Puerto Rico). Prerequisite: Any topic of SPN 230, or equivalent. Enrollment limited to 20.
