This course examines the influences of culture, socioeconomic status, developmental level, and temperament on music teaching and learning, including the pedagogical knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate effective music education for diverse populations of students.

Open to Graduate students only. The course is fully online, and utilizes both asynchronous and synchronous learning environments. Content other than course texts is provided through the online environments of Moodle, a private course wiki, and a virtual classroom hosted on Blackboard Collaborate. Coursework includes blogs, group discussions of assigned readings, collaborative assignments, and a final project. Final project options include (a) a review of literature on a specific topic relative to diversity in music education, (b) development of a wiki-based project within which information about diversity can be shared with music education colleagues in a school sett ing, or (c) the development of materials that would be appropriate for teaching a curricular unit in a diverse school music setting or with special populations of students in a school music setting.
