Want to share your passion for all things STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)? If so, this may be the intern program for you! The Massachusetts Academy of Sciences is a not-for-profit organization with a mission of putting a face on science in the Commonwealth. We do this in many ways, including visiting middle school classrooms with science demos and our animal mascots, serving as mentors to middle school students engaged in independent research projects, talking with other STEM majors about what is good (and bad) about their STEM college education, and posting interesting blogs about the science we find in the news. The intern program is quite flexible. We will tailor your experience to meet your interests.
Students can choose to participate in one or more of the following opportunities. 1) Engage in STEM (E-STEM): Interns who participate in E-STEM travel to local public schools and mentor middle school students in science research. To participate in this internship you MUST sign up for both Fall and Spring semester, enroll for 3 credits, and be available on Tuesday?s from 1-5 pm. 2) MAS Administration: Interns learn how to run a non-profit organization committed to increasing the levels of civic science literacy in the state. You might engage in fundraising, record keeping, social media, finances ? or some of the many other tasks required to keep the MAS functioning. Students may sign up for 1 to 4 credits ? please speak with the instructor to determine the appropriate credit level ? and the schedule is flexible. 3) MAS Mascots: Interns help take care of and train the MAS mascots ? which include an African Grey Parrot, a Bearded Dragon and a Ball Python. A new component of this position is the creation of online resources about the mascots, such as training video?s, photo?s and social media. Students may sign up for 1-4 credits ? please speak with the instructor to determine the appropriate credit level - and the schedule is flexible. Spire-based registration for this internship will default to 3 credits. For those interested in Administration or Mascots ? the instructor will adjust the number of credits after enrollment.
