From excursions far into the jungles of South America to a 48-hour exploration of local art and cuisine, good travel journalism brings the world into our living rooms. Travel journalism provides inspiration for adventures yet to come and opens readers' eyes to the many wonders that local and foreign destinations have to offer. It requires reporters to bring a journalist's critical eye for observation and a storyteller's flair to bring different locales to life. In this class, we will focus on unearthing hidden gems in your town or nearby that you've passed a hundred times but have never entered, or places that you go to every day where you've stopped paying attention to the details and the people. Students will learn about the full spectrum of travel journalism, including memoir, essay, blogs and guidebooks. Students will also work to strengthen their use of observation, description, structure, personal voice and angles in pursuing stories.
Open to Journalism majors only. Pre Req: JOURNAL 300
