In this course we explore ways in which a) everyday communicative practices and culture are intertwined, and b) the multiple ways in which social identities (particularly race/ethnicity, but also gender) are both reflected and reconstituted through communicative practices. We particularly emphasize the ways in which our cultural backgrounds channel our interpretations of communicative practices, and the ways in which historical relationships of inequality in the US shape the communicative practices and social identities of various groups.
Open to Senior and Junior Communication majors only. PreReq:COMM 118 or 212 COMM 320 formerly numbered COMM 397I. If you have received credit for taking COMM 397I, you will not receive credit for taking COMM 320.
