This course is a wide-ranging introduction to current environmental and conservation issues and their historical and geographical contexts. Special attention will be placed on examining the processes that so transformed the earth during the 20th century and to the key political, economic, social, cultural, and ecological factors in environmental change today. Diverse case studies from around the world will enable us to develop better global perspectives on the state of the natural world and environmental crises such as deforestation, the destruction of grasslands and wetlands, desertification, the loss of biodiversity, and climatic change. We will also examine international conservation efforts and the challenges ahead. (Gen.Ed. SB)
