Detailed discussion of the universal principles of genetic analysis used to understand biological processes. The course will focus on simple model organisms. Topics include forward genetic screens, epistasis and complementation analyses. We will also discuss reverse genetics approaches including both knockout mutations and RNAi knock down analyses. Students will be assigned a small selection of primary papers that illustrate the approaches discussed in lecture and these papers will be dissected in detail in discussion sections.
