This course seeks to introduce and familiarize students to the concept and field of public health as distinguished from clinical medicine and healthcare by focusing on current national and local public health news. Through identification and critical examination of public health current events, students will be able to conceptualize and contextualize the relevance of core public health principles for society and their lives. Historically significant events and trends will be linked to current public health issues. This discussion based course will invite students to think broadly, synthesize information, and assess credibility of sources to analyze current public health problems. Students will take note of and consider the ways in which public health issues are reported on and covered in mainstream and alternative media, particularly with respect to language use and narrative construction. Students will bring their ideas and perspectives to bear on current public health debates.
