Antislavery in Hampshire County, 1820s-1860s. At the start of this class we will read several secondary accounts of the abolitionist movement from a national, state, and local perspective. Then we will start our own investigation of the movement based on primary sources of various descriptions--newspapers, memoirs, diaries, and so forth-- that
disclose features of abolitionism in this region. Paper topics might include biographies of leading and lesser activists, events like resistance to the Fugitive Slave Act, the local Underground Railroad, the campaigns of regional militia units in the Civil War, etc.
Open to Seniors and Juniors in History, Middle East and Judaic majors only. Fulfills the junior year writing requirement for History majors. Students who do not meet the prerequisite may enroll by instructor consent..
Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
