This course (Malaria, Cancer, Climate Change, Congestion and Social Trends: Simulation Modeling for Addressing World Problems) introduces students to the concept and types of simulation modeling needed for understanding complex systems and addressing global problems in healthcare, energy, transportation, among others. We will start with simple experiments that can be calculated by hand or in Excel to introduce the concept of simulation; then extend into systems modeling using compartmental and agent-based techniques. We will explore applications of these models in multiple areas such as diffusion of information on social networks, speed-limits for traffic control, economic analyses of cancer screening, and modeling of climate change, learning the needed mathematical techniques along the way.
Open to students in Commonwealth Honors College or the College of Engineering. Math 131,M&I-ENG 273,CMPSCI121
