Data Mining (DM) is a new approach for analyzing data that has emerged as an important force over the last decade. Other closely-related terms are "machine learning" and "predictive analytics." These new technologies are products of the computer revolution; they use the processing power of fast computers to discover and analyze structures in quantitative data that conventional statistical methods often overlook. They exhaustively search for patterns in data, trying out many alternatives, combining multiple analyses, all in a quest for better prediction, classification and forecasting.
