This seminar explores the past, present, and, especially, the future of the legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois. The focus of the course will be on his stature as an intellectual and what it means today in the current crises and challenges in education. We will use the open source online collection Credo to examine original writings by Du Bois and other intellectuals like Horace Mann Bond.
Freshmen Only In addition to guest lectures and team-based learning, students will be expected to participate fully in Du Bois birthday month events on the UMass Amherst campus, in Springfield, and, possibly, a trip to his boyhood home of Great Barrington. A Skype with colleagues at the Du Bois Pan African Memorial Center in Accra, Ghana, is also planned.
