This is the first semester of a two-semester Honors Thesis Seminar that offers a multidisciplinary exploration of the causes and consequences of globalization in the world economy. The objective of the course is to introduce students to several dimensions of the multi-faceted process of globalization, ranging from its effects on labor and financial markets to its impact on poverty, health and education. Analysis will be grounded in economic theory as well as empirical evidence and students will be helped to develop the skills required for individual research within this framework.

Preference given to Commonwealth Honors College Juniors and Seniors using this course towards their Capstone Experience requirement.
May be used to fulfill IE requirement of Econ primary majors.

Globalization: Causes and Consequences
This is the first semester of a two-semester Honors Thesis Seminar that offers a multidisciplinary exploration of the causes and consequences of globalization in the world economy. The objective of the course is to introduce students to several dimensions of the multifaceted process of globalization, ranging from its effects on labor and financial markets to its impact on poverty, health and education. Analysis will be grounded in economic theory as well as empirical evidence and students will be helped to develop the skills required for individual research within this framework.
The course is structured so that students complete their honors thesis in a community of classmates within the structure of a traditional classroom, as explained on the website of the Commonwealth Honors College: https://www.honors.umass.edu/capstone-experience
The goal of this semester is to define topics and research methods for the honors thesis. Students will develop a thesis proposal, including a description of the proposed research question, a preliminary outline and a research plan by the middle of the semester and a revised and detailed proposal by the end of the semester.
