Did you know that poetry was once an Olympic event? Or that equestrian is the most expensive event? In this course, we will explore the origins and development of the modern Olympic movement. Beginning with the Ancient Olympics, we will trace the expansion of the Modern Games from an amateur athletic event in the early 20th century to the international extravaganza it has become in the 21st century. Our exploration will involve discussions of readings, film and other media. Topics will include the competitions in the Games themselves, as well as examples of the historical, societal and political significance of this event. Citius, Altius, Fortius!
