This course explores the history of Spain from the Napoleonic period (1808) through the economic crisis of the 2000s. The class will focus on significant topics including the process of decolonization during the nineteenth century, the social, political and cultural changes of the early twentieth century, the Spanish Civil War, the rise of regional nationalisms, the dictatorship of Francisco Franco and the transition to democracy. We will utilize secondary readings and discussion along with a variety of primary source texts including literature and film. Knowledge of Spanish is not required.
