Our contemporary world is increasingly dominated by visual images and one prominent example of this trend is the increasing popularity of comic books and graphic novels. They are not only taking up space in book stores and serving as the material for a number of successful film franchises, but comic books have also been appearing more frequently in the classroom. This seminar focuses on creating a foundation for students to work with and think about images in the future by building a critical vocabulary and a set of analytic tools that can be used to read comic books, but that can also be applied to other aspects of our visual culture. Using these skills, students will work together to learn to read comics and to develop their visual literacy.
Open to first-year Humanities and Fine Arts Exploratory Track students and first-year HFA Majors.
Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
