This course introduces Jewish artistic traditions, including creation, patronage, and impact on major European, American, and international artistic movements. Beginning with art, architecture, and archaeology of the Mediterranean world, it will consider Medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, the influence of the Haskalah, depiction of Jewish communities in art, film and photography in the nineteenth century by European artists such as Moritz Daniel Oppenheim and in the twentieth by Roman Vishniak, Alter Kacyzne, and Marc Chagall. Included will be examination of the impact of Jewish culture and philosophy on twentieth century movements such as Abstract Expressionism, contemporary international and Israeli art, and cartooning and graphic novels.
