This seminar will explore the work of Machado de Assis (1839-1908) from his beginnings rooted in romanticism to his full development as the preeminent writer of fiction in Brazil, in many ways still unclassifiable and ahead of both his time and ours. We will read most of his novels, many short stories, some poems, his important critical essays, and key works about him. Readings in Portuguese; course conducted in Portuguese.
Requirements: active participation in the seminar, with research and interpretive reports; several short papers during the semester; one long (final) research paper on a subject to be decided in consultation with the professor.
Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
